However, the end was abrupt, marked by a red flag. “Yes, I knew I was champion the moment I saw the red flag,” he says. “During the race I always tried to stay in the top three and, in fact, I don't remember ever going above fourth position.”

Strategy and knowledge of his rivals' situation allowed him to secure the title. “I knew that my main rival was seventh or eighth, which was just the limit I needed to be champion if I finished in the top three.” Despite the strangeness of the outcome, Rueda enjoyed it intensely. “It was a bit of a strange ending, because being crowned champion with a red flag is not the most exciting thing. When I arrived at the parc ferme there was no one and it was a pretty strange situation. Even so, I really enjoyed it.”
