Albon and Henriette dominate Transgrancanaria 2026 in a historic exhibition
The Norwegian couple conquers the Classic modality in a race marked by extreme weather and massive abandonments
Jonathan Albon and Henriette Albon consolidate themselves as the reference couple in the European ultratrail after taking the absolute victory in the Transgrancanaria 2026. The duo, known for their perfect synchronicity, shone in the demanding Classic mode of 125 kilometers with almost 7,000 meters of positive gradient.
With more than a thousand participants, the test started at midnight from Playa de las Canteras in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. From the first kilometers, the runners faced cold, wind and difficult terrain that already claimed its first victims at dawn in Artenara, including the current UTMB champion, Tom Evans.
Jonathan, Hannes Namberger and Josh Wade led the race for much of the course, maintaining a tactical and constant pace. The British Albon launched his decisive attack in the final third, arriving at the Garañón camp (km 90) with a clear advantage. Finally he crossed the finish line in Maspalomas in 12 hours and 58 minutes, lifting the champion ribbon with absolute control.
Two hours later, Henriette Albon replicated the female feat. The Norwegian, who already won in 2025, completed the race in 15 hours and 16 minutes, with more than an hour and a half ahead of her rivals. His victory reflects a combination of strength, technique and mental endurance that few manage to sustain for more than 15 hours.
The preparation of the Albons in Romsdal (Norway) was key. Faced with a very harsh winter, they resorted to sauna sessions and heat baths to simulate the conditions of the island. In addition, they optimized their slope training in a section close to their home with 350 meters of slope, adapting to the demands of the Canary Islands circuit.
The twenty-seventh edition of Transgrancanaria stood out for being one of the toughest in recent history. The previous rains made the route even more difficult and caused more than 40% of abandonments. However, the leaders demonstrated tactical intelligence and perseverance to overcome each obstacle along the way.
In the women's category, Claudia Tremps maintained her regularity on the podium for the eighth consecutive year, sharing second position with the Swiss Mélanie Delasoie after a strategic pact in the last five kilometers of the Barranco de los Vicentes. Both resisted more than 16 hours of physical and mental exhaustion until they crossed the finish line together.
In the men's field, Hannes Namberger was second and Josh Wade third. The big surprise came with Borja Fernández, a Cantabrian and worker in the construction sector, who achieved fourth position facing trail running professionals. His performance demonstrates the growing competitiveness and passion of amateur sport.
Among the local runners, Estanislao Rivero and Yasmina Castro stood out as the fastest, occupying 14th and 13th place respectively, in an honorary classification that recognizes the efforts of the island's athletes.
The Transgrancanaria 2026 was not only a physical challenge, but a test of strategy, resistance and adaptation to the climate. The Albons consolidate their legend while the rest of the competitors demonstrate the strength of the trail running spirit, overcoming adversity and leaving memorable stories on each section of the trails of Gran Canaria.
